Corporate Governance - Policies and Procedures

Developing policies and procedures

Corporate GoveranceHaving internal policies and procedures in place helps your organisation to:

  • Ensure that everyone involved in your organisation is aware of the rules and regulations governing your work
  • Ensure fair and equitable treatment of individuals
  • Ensure that you comply with legal requirements
  • Ensure that you comply with your organisation’s constitution
  • Provide guidance in relation to decision-making
  • Ensure that you comply with terms and conditions of funding
  • Induct new staff, board members and volunteers

It is important to make sure that any policies and procedures your organisation develops are appropriate to your need.  Some policies and procedures are required by law (for example, grievance and disciplinary procedures for employees); others are a matter of good practice or may be required by funders as a condition of funding.

Organisations operate in a constantly changing environment: either because of changes in the law, or changes in the organisation itself.  This means that it’s important to review your policies and procedures on a regular basis, to ensure that they remain relevant to your organisation’s needs.

RCN can help by providing sample policies to members that you can amend to suit your needs, and by providing support to help you develop policies and procedures for your organisation.
